On Saturday, July 27, Energize Delaware partnered with Habitat for Humanity and Just a Hand Up Community Navigation to participate in its Rock the Block event. The purpose of this event was to revitalize the community of Coverdale Crossroads. Coverdale Crossroads is located on Delaware Route 18 and Delaware Route 404, west of Georgetown and southeast of Bridgeville.
Volunteers from the community worked with Habitat for Humanity to assist with yard work, power washing and other beautification and safety projects at local homes. While these projects took place on the exterior of the homes, Energize Delaware’s HEC2 Program was able to offer residents energy education inside the homes as well. Auditors were available on-site to provide on-the-spot free Home Energy Check-Ups. The Home Energy Check-Up is a one-hour in-home appointment that includes energy-conservation tips, referrals to additional programs and same-day installation of up to $100 worth of energy-saving products, including LED light bulbs and showerheads, at no charge.
Prior to the event, Evelyn Wilson, president of Just a Hand Up Community Navigation, who is also a resident of the Coverdale Crossroads community, received a free Home Energy Check-Up at her home. She was able to share with her community members the benefits of the check-up and encourage others to participate. Once the residents began to see the auditors in action, word quickly spread, and the auditors became overwhelmed with interest and appointments. Many participants spoke highly of the information given and were appreciative of the energy-saving measures installed in their homes.
At the conclusion of the event, a portion of the residents received Home Energy Check-Ups that day. More than 10 people scheduled appointments for the following week, and a list of interested residents have intentions to follow up and schedule at a later date. This event was a huge success in the area, and Energize Delaware is looking forward to supporting similar community events to bring awareness to the HEC2 Program and the services it offers to Delawareans.
