Partner Spotlight: Lawson Home Services

Energize Delaware and Franklin Energy would like to recognize Lawson Home Services for the outstanding work they performed at a recent project in Hockessin. The Lawson Home Services Team put together a whole-house work scope to address the comfort issues and high operating costs of this Hockessin home. During the energy assessment, it was discovered that the home had many opportunities for insulation, air sealing, and health & safety improvements. The Energy Auditor noted poor attic insulation, leaky can lights, a leaky attic access, and poorly insulated rim joists.

The attic presented some challenges because a large section was floored and used for storage. The Lawson Home Services team was able to remove the existing attic decking and install an insulated floor decking system that maintains a higher R-Value while still allowing for storage space. The attic hatch cover installed is not only well insulated and sealed on all sides, but also has hooks for securing the hatch tightly to prevent further air leakage. Lawson Home Services sealed the many recessed can lights in the attic and vented the bathroom fans to the exterior with insulated ducts. The attic space, as it stands now, is insulated above the standard R-49, sealed effectively from the home, and provides storage space. Exposed rim joists in the crawl were thoroughly sealed and insulated. The crew’s duct sealing efforts reduced leakage from the distribution system by over 40%. The overall project was a success and earned the homeowner $2,850 in Energize Delaware HPwES incentives!

This project is an excellent illustration of the importance of treating the entire home during weatherization and getting creative with certain measures.
